Nicola is a self taught artist working from studio's in Wiltshire and the West of London. Born in Hayes, Middlesex, Nicola from a young age was exposed to the Indian cultures and traditions through close friends at school, soaking up the vibrant colours, elaborate designs and diverse richness of Indian fashions, traditions and celebrations. This exposure has greatly influenced Nicola's artwork as the use of bold, vivid colours, embellished details and richness of texture dominate her work. It would have seemed an obvious move for Nicola to have developed her talent into the art of henna (Mehndi), but surprisingly, Mehndi arrived late into Nicola's life, as if waiting for the right moment to flourish.
West meets East
Although Nicola always admired the quality and beauty of Mehndi, it wasn't until she had the opportunity of attending Indian weddings and festivals, that she was able to fully understand the significance that henna brings to these celebrations. Nicola had a very typical Western attitude towards henna - a pretty temporary tattoo - usually something you treat yourself with whilst on holiday! Yet, after immersing herself into the traditions of this wonderfully spiritual art form, Nicola understands that Mehndi is about much more. It is about women, celebration, hope, transition, growth, spirituality, good fortune, adornment and above all, natural beauty. Mehndi is a unique art form in that it crosses all cultures and countries and has been around for centuries, passed from generation to generation, bringing it's own good luck, fortune and beauty to the wearer.
Now, Nicola woks full-time with henna, changing a successful career in Marketing to a life that harnesses honesty, beauty, joy and creativity.
